Tunisia is a North African country covering an area of 163,610 square kilometers with a population of over 11.78 million inhabitants. It is bordered to the north and east by the Mediterranean Sea. Its western border opens to Algeria (965 km) and its south-eastern border to Libya (459 km).

The geography of Tunisia is varied and consists of mountains in the North. Its name derived from that of its capital, Tunis, located in the north of the country. Almost 40% of the land area is occupied by the Sahara Desert, with the rest being made up of very fertile land.

The Tunisian economy, enjoying a degree of integration in world trade among the highest in the world, is distinguished at the World Economic Forum on Africa. Tunisia is ranked 10th among 14 countries in the Middle East and North Africa region, and its overall score is below the regional and world averages.

Tunisia’s real GDP is expected to rebound and grow 2% in 2021 and 3.9% in 2022, if the pandemic recedes and allows a restart of the global economy, especially in Europe, upon which Tunisia relies heavily. Inflation is expected to continue to decline over the medium term to around 5.7% in 2021 and 4.3% in 2022, due to prudent monetary policy.

The budget deficit is expected to improve to 8.6% of GDP in 2021 and 8% in 2022. The current account deficit is also expected to narrow over the medium term to 4.1% in 2021 and 3.6% in 2022 as the recovery continues.
