Pakistan, a country with land area of 881,913 square km is the world’s fifth most populous country with a population of almost 230 million and is located in South Asia. It is bordered by India to the east, China to the northeast, Afghanistan to the north and west, Iran to the southwest, and the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman to the south. It is a geographically diverse country with plains, deserts and towering Karakoram, Himalayan, Hindu Kush and Pamir mountain ranges, which include some of the world’s highest peaks: K2 (8,611 metres) and Nanga Parbat (8,126 metres). The 1,000 mile long (1,609 km) Indus River and its tributaries flow through the country up to the Arabian Sea. Pakistan is a federal parliamentary republic consisting of four provinces, with Islamabad as its capital. The official languages of Pakistan are English and Urdu, and the currency is the Pakistani rupee (PKR).

Pakistan got its independence from Great Britain in 1947.
