Located in the Sahel-Saharan region, Mauritania belongs fully to this pivotal area between the Arab Maghreb and West Africa. Before the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis, Mauritania had carried out a rebasing exercise of its GDP which concluded to a revaluation of 22.7% for 2014 and 34.8% for 2018. GDP is thus estimated at USD 7.6 billion for 2019. The economy is now expected to contract by 3.2% in 2020, against a growth of 6.3% anticipated before the crisis, and to rebound to 2% in 2021. This would bring GDP to USD 7.4 billion by 2020.

According to the 2021 Finance Act, the primary sector is expected to register a recession of 6.9% in 2020, the secondary sector of 2.2% and the tertiary sector of 2.4%. The recovery in 2021 should be driven by the mining industries sector, which will record a growth of 2.7%, and the services sector (+0.9%).
