Hungary is a member state of the European Union, located in Central Europe, and it is in the Central European Time zone. Its territory is 93,030 square kilometers and has a population of about 10 million. The country's official language is Hungarian. Its largest city is its capital, Budapest, where one-fifth of the entire population lives.
Hungary has not yet adopted the EUR, but it maintains its own currency, the Hungarian Forint (HUF). It is ranked by the World Bank as the world's 58th largest economy by purchasing power parity and is an OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) high-income economy. Hungary is 45th on the list of countries by Human Development Index issued by the United Nations Development Programme.
The country is an export-oriented market economy with a considerable emphasis on foreign trade (the most important export partner is germany). Large Hungarian companies are included in the BUX, the Hungarian stock market index listed on Budapest Stock Exchange. The private sector accounts for more than 80% of the economy. Foreign ownership of and investment in Hungarian firms is significant.
