Michael provides state and local tax services as part of our San Francisco office. He has been practicing California and federal tax law with a focus on tax controversy since 1999. Based in Sacramento, Michael will be at the epicenter of California tax administration.
Michael has significant experience advising business entities and high net worth individuals on a broad range of tax matters, including:
- California income/franchise tax controversy;
- Protest, appeal, and settlement representation;
- Mergers and acquisition due diligence review;
- Income/franchise tax planning and evaluation;
- Voluntary disclosure and penalty abatement;
- Financial services and asset manager representation;
- Personal income tax residency, stock basis review; and
- Other California tax controversy matters.
Prior to joining Andersen, Michael spent almost eight years with the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) and over a year as the FTB Liaison to the Board of Equalization Chair and Member of the FTB. He was a Senior Tax Counsel in FTB’s Multistate, Tax Shelter, and Technical Resources Bureaus. Additionally, he has provided California tax controversy representation to Fortune 1000 clients while with several other Big Four firms.
Michael is also a retired U.S. Navy Captain, having served a combined 26 years in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserve.
