Michael Barrett is a managing director with over 17 years of professional tax experience. He advises large, owner-operated, venture capital-backed, and private equity-backed businesses and their owners. He also works with companies ranging from emerging growth firms to multinational enterprises, focusing on corporate tax planning and compliance within the Commercial practice.
His work spans federal and state tax compliance, ASC 740, entity structuring, state and local tax planning, and international tax planning. He provides guidance on a wide range of tax and commercial matters, including tax reforms, intellectual property planning, U.S. taxation of foreign businesses (CFCs and PFICs), equity compensation, research and experimentation tax credits, mergers and acquisitions, and choice of entity analysis.
Michael works with clients across various industries, including technology, life sciences, agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, and retail/consumer products.
Beyond his work with operating businesses, he provides tax compliance and consulting services to high-net-worth individuals, families, and owners of closely held companies. Within the Private Client Services practice, he focuses on wealth preservation through strategic income and estate tax planning.
